Install the Runway Dev plugin

The Runway Dev plugin sets up your coding agent to build with Runway Dev in one install. It bundles two parts:

  • The Runway Dev MCP connects the agent to your Runway Dev account. The agent can check which models your project can use, with their limits and prices, set up Model Routers, manage Characters and look into failed tasks and routing decisions.
  • Skills show the agent how to integrate the API with the official SDKs and how to build with models, Model Routers, Characters, Recipes and Workflows.

The plugin does not generate media. Generations run in your app through the API.

Run these commands in a terminal:

Terminal window
codex plugin marketplace add runwayml/skills
codex plugin add runway-api@runway-dev
codex mcp login runway-dev

The last command opens your browser to sign in to your Runway Dev account. Start a new Codex session to use the plugin.

Runway Dev is also in the plugin directory that ChatGPT and Codex share. To install from there instead, open Runway Dev in the plugin directory, search for it in the Plugins tab or enter /plugins in Codex CLI. Install from one place only, so the agent does not load two copies of the skills.

The Codex IDE extension does not support plugins.

Type this in Cursor’s Agent chat, then select Install:

/add-plugin runway-api

You can also open Customize in the sidebar, search for Runway Dev, select Install and choose user or project scope. The plugin is listed in the Cursor Marketplace.

Open Runway Dev for Grok Bot, select Add to Grok Bot and confirm with Add in Grok Bot. On a Mac with Grok Bot installed, you can open the same install link from a terminal:

Terminal window
open "grokbot://app/v1/plugin/add?id=78556856"

Check that Runway Dev appears under Installed in Connect apps.

The Runway Dev plugin is not available for Claude Code yet. Until it is, install the Runway Dev MCP and the skills separately. These steps also work for the Code tab in the Claude desktop app.

Terminal window
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user runway-dev-mcp https://dev.runwayml.com/mcp/claude
npx skills add https://github.com/runwayml/skills/tree/main/claude/skills --skill runway-dev-setup --skill runway-dev --skill runway-dev-models -a claude-code -y
claude mcp login runway-dev-mcp

The last command opens your browser to sign in to your Runway Dev account. On Claude Code versions older than 2.1.186, run /mcp in a session instead and select runway-dev-mcp.

The second command installs runway-dev-setup and runway-dev, which every integration needs, plus runway-dev-models for model endpoints. To build with Model Routers, Characters, Recipes or Workflows, add that skill too, for example --skill runway-dev-characters. Skills lists all seven.

Claude uses its own MCP endpoint and skill copies. The Claude endpoint can’t create new Characters; create them in your Runway Dev account.

To use the Runway Dev MCP in Claude Chat or Cowork, add it as a connector. See Connect Runway Dev.

Agents that support MCP and Agent Skills but not the plugin can set up the same two parts separately.

  1. Connect the Runway Dev MCP. The server URL is https://dev.runwayml.com/mcp. Connect Runway Dev has the setup for each client.

  2. Install the skills, replacing <agent> with your agent’s name from the supported agents list, such as gemini-cli or github-copilot:

    Terminal window
    npx skills add runwayml/skills --skill runway-dev-setup --skill runway-dev --skill runway-dev-models -a <agent> -y

This installs runway-dev-setup and runway-dev, which every integration needs, plus runway-dev-models for model endpoints. To build with Model Routers, Characters, Recipes or Workflows, add that skill too, for example --skill runway-dev-characters.

The plugin includes all seven skills. When you install skills separately, always include runway-dev-setup and runway-dev, then add the skills for what you are building:

SkillWhat it covers
runway-dev-setupConnecting your Runway Dev account and project
runway-devCurrent docs, credentials, SDKs and errors for every integration
runway-dev-modelsModel endpoints for video, image and audio
runway-dev-model-routersModel Routers
runway-dev-charactersCharacters and real-time Sessions
runway-dev-recipesRecipes
runway-dev-workflowsPublished Workflows

npx skills add installs into the current project. Add -g to install for every project.

If you haven’t signed in yet, your agent asks you to sign in to your Runway Dev account in your browser the first time it uses Runway Dev. Complete sign-in yourself; do not ask the agent to automate it. If you don’t have an account yet, create one.

To check the connection, ask your agent which Runway Dev account it is connected to. Then try a first task:

  • “Help me integrate video generation into this app.”
  • “Help me investigate a failed Runway task.”
  • “Configure a Model Router to favor lower-cost models.”

Your app makes its own API calls with a Runway API key, created in your Runway Dev account and stored on your server as RUNWAYML_API_SECRET. Never put the key in the plugin or MCP config. See Create your account.
